Ep 10 - VR in Construction: Dimension10

What role will VR play in the future of Construction? Is it a hype or does it bring real value? Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality, you hear the words buzz everywhere. Facebook bought the VR system Oculus for billions of dollars. Everyone agrees that you get a much better understanding of a built asset, e.g. a building, if you immerse yourself in VR to study it, in comparison with just looking at a 2D drawing. But what does the workflow look like with VR, and when do you get the most benefit out of it? In order to find out, we invited Aleksander Langmyhr from the Norwegian VR start-up Dimension 10 and self declared BIMfluencer Fredrik Holm from Asplan Viak, one of the major Norwegian engineering advisor and planning companies.

Top tips to start using VR

  • You need an enthusiast, a BIMfluencer, inside the organisation to push BIM collaboration and VR into new projects.
  • VR gives you the possibility to experience the design. That gives you a physical feeling of the size and the 3D model.
  • Make sure to distribute VR kits throughout your offices, have your staff try it, get used to it. Let it become part of your change management. You save travels, you save time.
  • To experience the BIM model alone in VR is great and adds value. But the value increases when you collaborate together both in BIM and VR. When you start having regular meetings in the BIM model in the VR, you use the metadata more, and then you utilise the asset in a whole different way and create more value.
  • Just try! It will be both fun and useful.
